Origins

One of Us was born out of the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) that gathered the highest number of signatures in the history of the European Union: 1.9 million collected, of which 1.7 million were validated by the European Commission. The One of Us ECI calls for the protection of the human embryo from two types of EU-funded programs involving its destruction.

As Carlo Casini, co-founder of One of Us, once said: “The embryo is one of us.”

The latest scientific knowledge teaches us that every new embryo, from the very moment of conception, carries a unique DNA, making him or her a unique person — a “specimen of humanity” that has never before existed in all of history.

Faced with this reality — which calls not only for respect but also for admiration and wonder — One of Us brings together researchers, teachers, scientists, students, and European citizens of all ages and backgrounds. One of Usrepresents a tremendous social force.

Since 2014, it has been structured as a European Federation, thanks to the mobilization of 25 founding NGOs from 10 different countries. Today, One of Us unites 50 grassroots NGOs working across 19 EU countries, in the service of vulnerable motherhood.
